What happens in play

Before the race you pick the marble of your country, and then you race other marbles to the finish. On the way you get past obstacles and collect coins and loot boxes, and you can knock rival marbles off the track to get ahead.

Steering is simple. On a keyboard you use A and D or the left and right arrows. On a screen you move the mouse cursor or slide a finger across it, which keeps the game playable on both a computer and a phone. For a first race, it helps to keep steering small and to watch the track edges rather than the other marbles. After a few attempts you will start to see where obstacles tend to cluster and where a coin or a loot box is worth the detour. Playing with a friend adds a simple rivalry on the same screen, and the challenge mode lets you try a track with less pressure. Because each race is short, it is easy to run one more.

Poki lists solo play and play with a friend, and also a challenge mode where you can practise. That makes it easy to learn the track in practice and then take it into a real race. The country choice is a small touch that gives each race a bit of identity, and the loot boxes and coins give you something to aim for besides the finish line. Since you can bump rivals off the course, the race is as much about position as about speed.

Buttons you need

  • Mouse / fingerMove across the screen to steer

Small advice

  1. Use the challenge mode to learn the obstacles before racing others.
  2. Steer in small movements; big swings make it easier to lose the marble.
  3. Take coins when they are on your line, but do not chase them off it.
  4. Knocking rivals off the track can matter as much as speed.
  5. If you play with a friend, race the same track a few times to compare lines.

Right for

Players who want something quick to learn, and anyone who plays on a phone or tablet. It is also a good pick for two people on the same device. It is also easy to hand to a younger player or a newcomer, since steering takes only two directions.

Downsides

— The tracks are shaped by obstacles, so one wrong move can cost a place.

— Loot boxes and coins are part of the race, so some players will find it busier than a plain race.

— Poki shows a short ad break around play sessions.

— Because rivals can knock you off the track, a race can be decided by contact rather than by your own steering alone.
